Israeli defense minister vows to build settlements in northern Gaza

by Ed Newman

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has vowed to build new Jewish settlements on land in northern Gaza that’s currently being occupied by Israel’s military.

Katz affirmed that the new settlements would replace those evacuated by Israel in 2005.

His declaration came after Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, delivered a sermon in Gaza ahead of the Christmas holiday rejecting plans by the U.S. and other foreign powers to lead Gaza’s reconstruction effort.

The cardinal said: “It is we the people here who will decide how to rebuild everything.”
