ICAP’s 65th anniversary celebration begins

by Ed Newman

A panel discussion on Fidel Castro and international solidarity kicks off the events commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), founded by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro on December 30, 1960.

Two hundred and forty activists from 32 countries have arrived in Havana for the anniversary celebrations, having made personal financial sacrifices to cover their travel and lodging expenses on the island.

The panel will be held at ICAP headquarters, featuring presentations by directors of the Fidel Castro Center, as well as activists and representatives of the international solidarity movement with Cuba, which comprises 1,700 friendship associations in 150 countries.

The anniversary celebration, dedicated to Fidel Castro just days before the start of his centennial year, runs from the 27th to the 29th of this month. On the first day, the book “The Solidarity of the Peoples: Always with Cuba,” about the history of the institution, will also be presented.

The opening day at the Fidel Castro Center will also include the inauguration of the photographic exhibition “ICAP, Solidarity and the Cuban Revolution,” the unveiling of a commemorative stamp, and a musical performance by troubadours.

Among the visitors are the 120 members from 23 countries of the “65th Anniversary of ICAP” solidarity and volunteer work brigade, which has been active since the beginning of this week. This Saturday, the 53rd contingent of the “Venceremos” brigade from the United States, with approximately 40 young Americans, will join the celebrations.

A Volunteer Work Marathon is scheduled for Sunday the 28th, with the participation of the ICAP’s provincial delegations. In the afternoon, the House of Friendship will host a “Cultural Festival of Nations.”

The main anniversary event will take place on Monday, the 29th, at ICAP headquarters, commemorating 65 years of promoting friendship, defending Cuba and the just causes of all peoples, and working for justice and peace.
