Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced on Saturday that the United States’ failure to renew the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) is clear evidence of its current belligerent doctrine, which prioritizes the arms race and the use of force over international peace and security.
In a message on social media, the Foreign Minister stated that this attitude from Washington moves the world further away from disarmament and increases the risks for all of humanity.

“It is urgent to respect the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which guarantees the total elimination of nuclear weapons in a transparent, verifiable, and irreversible manner,” Rodríguez demanded.
He emphasized that this path “is the only way to guarantee that humanity will never again suffer their terrible impact. It is a matter of survival.”
The Cuban foreign minister reiterated the island’s firm support for the universalization, respect, and full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the first legally binding international instrument to completely prohibit nuclear weapons, with a view to their total elimination.
“The world deserves and needs a lasting, just, and sustainable peace for all. It is essential to strive for a world free of nuclear weapons, for the sake of present and future generations,” he stated.
Cuba was one of the first 50 countries to sign the TPNW on the very day it was opened for signature in 2017, and has consistently advocated for nuclear powers to assume their responsibilities in eliminating these arsenals, which constitute the greatest threat to the survival of the human species.
