Cuba reiterates willingness to strengthen ties with Spain

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reiterated today to the Spanish government his willingness to strengthen political, economic, and trade dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of both countries.

Rodríguez wrote on his Twitter account that during his visit to Madrid he was received by his counterpart, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, with whom he held a working meeting.

The head of Cuban diplomacy stated on Twitter the island’s determination to strengthen ties with Spain, “in the current complicated international context, in the face of breaches of peace, security, and international law, and the growing aggression of the United States against #Cuba, particularly the blockade of fuel supplies, which causes suffering to our people.”

He also emphasized that in the meeting with Albares, “I conveyed Cuba’s support for the organization and holding of the Ibero-American Summit in November in this capital and highlighted the importance of multilateralism in addressing global challenges and promoting sustainable development.”

On the other hand, the official statement issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the meeting addressed the current situation in Cuba following the tightening of Washington’s economic embargo on the largest island in the Caribbean.

The situation of Spanish companies in Cuba and Spain’s decision to provide humanitarian aid through the United Nations system, including food and essential medical supplies, were also discussed, the statement noted.

Furthermore, the parties exchanged views on the main objectives set by the Spanish Pro Tempore Secretariat for the Ibero-American Summit, which will take place on November 4 and 5 in Madrid.
