Director General of IDEAS Multimedios denounces impact of U.S. blockade at World Media Summit in China

by Ed Newman

Randy Alonso, Director General of IDEAS Multimedios, described it as significant that the Cuban people are raising their voices and presenting their reality — a reality marked by the collective punishment imposed by the United States — at the 7th World Media Summit in China.

In an interview with Xinhua, Alonso noted that Cuba is a country under political, military, and media siege; therefore, having the opportunity to showcase the island’s reality and denounce the aggressive policy of the United States before media outlets from around the world is “crucial.”

This marks the first time that IDEAS Multimedios — an organization that encompasses media outlets such as *Cubadebate* and *Mesa Redonda*—has participated in the event, which is taking place in Beijing from yesterday through tomorrow.

The journalist emphasized the importance of highlighting the consequences of the U.S. blockade at the summit — a blockade that “condemns an entire people to hunger, power outages and a form of collective punishment that severely undermines the standard of living for all Cubans.”

For the Cuban delegation, Alonso noted that it would be “significant” to forge alliances with media outlets from other nations, in order to “continue fostering” a better understanding of the reality in Cuba — “beyond what is reported by major mainstream media outlets.”

Alonso also spoke positively about the scheduled discussions regarding the evolution of journalism, emerging trends and technologies, the exchange of professional experiences, and the various challenges currently facing the sector.

Advantages and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence

In particular, he addressed the challenges posed by the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) within the practice of contemporary journalism. “It is an indispensable tool, but one that always requires human supervision. It is not the case that artificial intelligence replaces the work of the journalist or the work of the media outlet,” he asserted.

The executive noted that Cuban journalism faces several challenges in this regard. “First, using artificial intelligence to produce content; second, producing enough content to ensure visibility globally,” he explained.

Third, he stated that content produced using AI on the Caribbean island must be hosted on platforms and at web addresses that are “compatible with artificial intelligence,” so that search engines can take them into account.
