Havana, February 18 (RHC) – The Independence Cup of Boxing will continue today in the Dominican Republic with the presence in the ring of two great Cuban figures: Olympic champion Erislandy Álvarez and double Olympic titleholder Julio César La Cruz.

Álvarez (65 kg) will face Esequiel Martínez of Santiago tonight, while La Cruz (+90 kg) will fight Seht Lawrense of Barbados.

Paris 2024 Olympic champion Ángel made a triumphant debut on Monday, defeating Miguel Ángel Encarnación of the Dominican Republic’s Team A 3-2 in one of the most anticipated fights of the tournament.

Last night, Cuban Saidel Horta, the world runner-up, opened his participation with a victory in the 60 kg division.

Horta won by a close 3-2 decision against local fighter Estrella Ángel, representing the Santiago team, in a highly technical bout.

The head coach of the Cuban national team, Eulises Pouyout Despaigne, praised the performance of the Cienfuegos boxer to Prensa Latina.

The tournament, which runs until Saturday, brings together boxers from Cuba, the United States, France, Ecuador, Guatemala, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, as well as the Dominican Republic’s national teams A and B, and two teams from Santiago de los Caballeros.

The Independence Cup is considered one of the premier amateur boxing competitions in the Caribbean, serving as preparation for future international events.
