Granma International celebrates six decades

by Ed Newman

Granma International celebrates its 60th anniversary today, having emerged in 1966 during the Tricontinental Conference held in this capital as a newsletter in Spanish, English, and French for delegates from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, highlighted on his Facebook profile that Granma International is a living testament to the fact that just ideas do not expire.

Morales Ojeda emphasized that the publication maintains the same voice that in 1966 denounced colonialism and that today confronts the challenges of disinformation, always with firmness and an internationalist vocation.

The historic leader of the Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, and Ernesto “Che” Guevara inspired the creation of this publication, conceived as a communication bridge to disseminate the truth about the Cuban Revolution and the struggles of the Third World beyond its borders.

Over these 60 years, the publication has transcended eras and geographies, adapting to changing times without losing its essence. In 1996, it ventured into the digital realm, becoming a pioneer among Cuban media.

During the Special Period, it maintained its circulation, incorporated new languages such as German and Italian, and achieved reprints in countries like Germany, Argentina, and Brazil, according to editorial data.

Currently, it circulates in some twenty countries, and its digital edition expands the reach of its content in a context marked by the proliferation of fake news and media manipulation.
