Cuban education: Conditions in place for the new school year

by Ed Newman

Cuba’s Minister of Education Ariatne Trujillo affirmed on Thursday in Havana that conditions are in place for the start of the new school year, despite the difficult situation the country is facing.

During a press conference held in the Cuban capital, the official highlighted the completion of the necessary study materials for the third phase of the Cuban education reform program as a positive aspect for this new school year.

One of the main challenges for this new academic year will be providing support to students in the most vulnerable situations.

“Sometimes what one of our teenagers needs is support to be able to manage their daily transportation to school,” she stated.

Trujillo explained that actions are currently being planned to ensure the completion of the teaching staff at all levels of education.

To this end, students in teacher training programs will be incorporated into the teaching staff, and salary incentives for teachers will be promoted.

She also detailed that concerns regarding the marketing and distribution of school uniforms are being evaluated across all regions.

In this regard, she outlined the alternatives being implemented to ensure student attendance.

“We are asking teachers for flexibility. Our children will arrive wearing their headscarves, and we will see if they feel more comfortable in other clothing that allows them to attend; therefore, there will be no requirement,” she emphasized.

The addition of Russian as a foreign language is another new feature of this academic year.
