Havana, March 11 (RHC) – Triple jumper Leyanis Pérez leads the group of six Cubans to the World Indoor Championships in Poland, the National Athletics Commission revealed here today.
Pérez, the reigning world champion both outdoors and indoors, will compete in Kujawy Pomorze alongside fellow triple jumpers Liadagmis Povea, Lázaro Martínez, and Andy Hechavarría, as well as long jumper Jorge Hodelín and hurdler Greysi Robles.
The 24-year-old, named Cuba’s best female athlete in 2025, will be seeking her third podium finish at the Winter Olympics, following her title in last year’s Nanjing meet and her runner-up finish in Glasgow in 2024.
On her European tour this season, the two-time Diamond League champion has recorded jumps of 14.75 meters at the Russian Winter and 14.65 meters at the Meeting de L’Eure in Val-de-Reuil, France.
Her compatriot Povea will arrive at the competition as the reigning runner-up, and her best jump in three indoor meets this year is 13.96 meters, achieved in Valencia.
In the men’s competition, Martínez, the champion four years ago in Belgrade, jumped 16.71 meters in Liévin and 16.52 meters in Valencia; meanwhile, Hechavarría leaped 17.03 meters during the third qualifying event at the Pan American Stadium in Havana.
The youngest members of the team, Jorge Hodelín, will compete in the world championships with a mark of 8.18 meters achieved at the Ourense International Meeting, and Robles is currently ranked 40th (8.09 seconds) out of 48 available spots for the 60-meter hurdles.
At the last edition in Nanjing, Cuba only sent three triple jumpers, and the gold and silver medals won by Leyanis Pérez and Liadagmis Povea secured the island’s place on the world medal table once again.
