More than six million signatures reaffirm Cuba’s commitment to peace

by Ed Newman

The signatures of more than 6,230,000 Cubans reaffirmed the largest island of the Antilles’ commitment to peace, in defense of national sovereignty, and against the blockade and war.

The announcement of the closing of the process promoted by Cuban civil society took place in the presence of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, and Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, amidst the celebrations throughout the island for International Workers’ Day, May 1st, under the slogan: The Homeland Defends Itself.

Every year, the archipelago becomes a global symbol of the proletariat’s celebration and a demonstration of the Caribbean nation’s resistance to the intensified threats and aggression from U.S. imperialism.

In the last week, numerous groups, institutions, representatives of Cuban civil society, and communities joined the popular movement “My Signature for the Homeland.”

“My Signature for the Homeland”  /  “Mi firma por la Patria”

This initiative of Cuban civil society, convened by the Head of State during the ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist character of the Revolution on April 16, has become a national and international solidarity movement that carries the truth of Cuba to every corner of the planet.

This petition drive, which officially began on April 19 at Playa Girón with the signatures of President Díaz-Canel himself and the leadership of the Revolution, has spread to all workplaces, communities, and institutions across the country. It has also been endorsed by intellectuals, artists, journalists, and workers from various sectors, as well as by Cuban diplomatic missions abroad and prominent figures from around the world.
