Brazilian intellectuals join condemnation of U.S. threats against Cuba

by Ed Newman

Theologian Frei Betto, singer-songwriter and playwright Chico Buarque, journalist Fernando Morais, and novelist Eric Nepomuceno are among the Brazilian intellectuals and artists who have endorsed the statement of solidarity with Cuba that the Network of Intellectuals, Artists, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity (REDH) has been circulating since May 2nd.

In a message posted on Facebook, the president of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto, thanked the Brazilian intellectuals for their unwavering solidarity and highlighted the hashtag #CubaIsNotAlone.

The statement from the Network for Human Rights (REDH), released by its International Coordination, denounces the recent military threats from the Donald Trump administration against Cuba, as well as the new sanctions that deepen the imperialist blockade.

While humanity cries out for peace, cooperation, and respect for international law, the statement continues, the Trump administration responds with the logic of state terrorism: the reinforcement of the criminal economic, commercial, and financial blockade, and the persecution of any financial transaction that dares to approach the island.

The document emphasizes that these actions do not respond to any political logic, but rather to the coercive action of an imperial power that resorts to force to try to nullify the sovereignty and dignity of a people.

The REDH expresses its full support for the Government and people of Cuba, recognizing their inalienable right to self-determination and to build their own destiny without external interference.

In the face of the recent and dangerous threats from the empire against Cuba, the REDH (Network for Human Rights) issues an urgent appeal to all intellectuals, academics, artists, the international community, governments, social movements, and the peoples of the world to speak out and unite in support of Cuba.

They demand the immediate and unconditional end to the economic blockade and the elimination of these new sanctions, which violate the Charter of the United Nations.
