Traditional Friendship Race to be Held in Cuba

by Javier Perez Jimenez

Hvana, May 12 (RHC) – The traditional Friendship Race will celebrate its 12th edition this Saturday, in the vicinity of the Russian Embassy in this capital.

At a press conference, the Russian ambassador to Havana, Viktor Koronelli, stated that although public participation might be lower this year due to Cuba’s difficult economic situation, the event would still achieve its goal of celebrating the victory against fascism and the spirit of friendship.

For his part, Juan Carlos Mesa, deputy director of the Marabana/Maracuba National Race and Walk Commission, confirmed that all the necessary conditions were in place for the event, with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the race starting at 10:00 a.m.

The route will run from the Embassy parking lot to 66th Street, along Third Avenue to 30th Street, and then back along First Avenue to 66th Street, the site of the diplomatic compound, a total distance of approximately four kilometers.

The race is part of the activities commemorating the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War, which began on August 8.

It has been held continuously since 2015, although in 2020, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was held virtually.

Traditionally, professional and amateur athletes, employees of local government agencies, students, and representatives of diplomatic missions accredited in Havana participate.
