The State Duma (the lower house of the Russian Parliament) has approved a resolution calling on the UN and legislative assemblies around the world regarding the intensification of the US policy of aggression toward Cuba.
The document, adopted by the Duma in its plenary session this Wednesday, notes a drastic increase in tensions surrounding Cuba as a result of unprecedented pressure from the United States, which is unjustified and contrary to international law.
The continued economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba, compounded by the energy blockade that has exacerbated the hardships of the Cuban people, constitutes a blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation and an example of illegitimate restrictions that contravene the principles of the UN Charter, the text states.
Russian lawmakers view the ostentatious deployment of a US naval air strike group in the Caribbean as particularly alarming. This inappropriate measure seeks to impose unacceptable conditions on the Cuban government through economic and military blackmail, pave the way for a change of power in Cuba, and ultimately establish total control over the country.
The Lower House of the Russian Parliament reaffirms its support for the Cuban people and government in their selfless struggle for independence and the right to choose their own path of development. It also reiterates its commitment to fostering the strategic partnership between Moscow and Havana, mutual assistance, and cooperation in various fields.
The Duma insists that Washington immediately cease its political and economic pressure on Cuba and its neocolonial practice of threats and blackmail.
Furthermore, it calls on the UN, legislative assemblies worldwide, and international parliamentary organizations to condemn the current US policy toward Cuba and urge Washington to immediately lift the trade, economic, financial, and energy embargo imposed on the island.
Tensions between Washington and Havana escalated at the beginning of the year, following the United States’ military action in Venezuela.
On January 29, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorizing tariffs on imports from countries that supply oil to Cuba and declared a state of emergency due to a supposed threat to national security from the island.
The measure exacerbated fuel shortages on the island, affecting electricity generation, transportation, food production, healthcare, and education.
The Cuban government maintains that Washington is using the energy embargo to strangle its economy and make living conditions unbearable for its population.
