Farewell, Comandante Ramiro Valdés!

by Ed Newman

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, expressed his profound sorrow today on social media for the passing of Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez.

“The passing of Commander of the Revolution, Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, is deeply painful, like the loss of a father,” the president wrote in his message.

The President recalled the respect and affection he always felt for him, as well as his support, advice, discreet collaboration, and exemplary dedication to the service of the Homeland.

“That’s how I always loved and respected him. That’s how I will remember his support and advice, his discreet collaboration, and his exemplary dedication to the service of the Homeland.”

Díaz-Canel emphasized that every act in Valdés Menéndez’s life was marked by his absolute loyalty to the leadership of Fidel and Raúl Castro Ruz, to his comrades in arms, and to the Moncada Program.

He noted that this loyalty remained from the attack on the Moncada Barracks in 1953 until his last breath, which occurred this Father’s Day.

“Every action in Commander Ramiro’s life was marked by his absolute loyalty to the leadership of Fidel and Raúl, to his comrades in arms, and to the Moncada Program, whose just essence he defended from the attack on the dictatorship’s stronghold in 1953 until the last breath of his exemplary life this Father’s Day, which is overshadowed by the pain of his passing.”

The message concluded with the expression: “Ever onward to victory, Commander!”
