China reaffirmed its support for Cuba on Thursday in defense of its sovereignty and national dignity, and demanded that the United States put an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade it has maintained against the island for 64 years.
In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the U.S. blockade and unilateral sanctions have caused immense suffering for the Cuban people.
Guo noted that, since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly has — for 34 consecutive years — passed resolutions demanding the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial siege against Cuba, with the backing of an overwhelming majority.
The spokesperson indicated that these votes reflect the rejection, by the vast majority of nations, of the serious violations by the United States of the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the international community is calling for an immediate end to these coercive measures, which, he stated, severely infringe upon the Cuban people’s right to subsistence and development.
China will continue to support Cuba’s defense of its sovereignty and national dignity, as well as its opposition to external interference and the blockade, Guo affirmed.
The spokesperson once again urged Washington to heed the demands of the international community, end the blockade and sanctions against the island, and immediately cease any form of threat or use of force against the Caribbean nation.
On Wednesday, Cuba received the broad support of the international community in its struggle against the blockade imposed by the United States — a blockade that was intensified to unprecedented levels during the Donald Trump administration. Despite diplomatic pressure and blackmail, 130 member states voted alongside Cuba in support of this denunciation—a stance Cuba has taken annually since 1992.
Earlier, during the UN debate, Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, criticized the continued unilateral measures taken by the United States against the island, stating that there is no justification for maintaining these illegal actions, which were imposed 64 years ago.
He further emphasized that it is unjustifiable to ignore the demand for justice that the Cuban people have been pursuing for 34 years.
