Cuba and Vietnam reaffirm solidarity and cooperation

by Ed Newman

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez held official talks on Monday with his Vietnamese counterpart, Le Hoai Trung, in which they reaffirmed the historic solidarity between the two nations.

The Cuban foreign minister emphasized that the Vietnamese foreign minister’s visit comes at a very complex time for Cuba, marked by the intensification of US sanctions and their impact on the Caribbean nation’s development.

Rodríguez stressed that Vietnam is “a benchmark of its people’s heroic and extraordinary struggle for national independence and the construction of a much more beautiful homeland,” and also an example of its economic and social progress.

The Cuban foreign minister expressed his gratitude for Vietnam’s cooperation and noted that, although the two countries are geographically opposite each other, they are closely linked by a shared history of struggle against imperialism and defense of self-determination.

Bruno Rodriguez also highlighted that Vietnam has established itself as the largest investor from Asia and Oceania in Cuba, with projects in strategic sectors such as agri-food, the production of basic necessities, construction materials, and renewable energy.

In the agri-food sector, joint initiatives for the production of rice, coffee, and corn have strengthened bilateral cooperation, and Vietnam has become Cuba’s main supplier of rice.

The top Cuban diplomat also expressed his appreciation for the donation of photovoltaic solar parks with a capacity of 80 megawatts, which will be located in the province of Mayabeque.

For his part, Le Hoai Trung described his visit as “a demonstration of the special relationship between the two parties and the respect for bilateral ties,” and conveyed greetings from the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, to President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the Leader of the Revolution, Raúl Castro.

During the meeting, the Vietnamese foreign minister briefed his Cuban counterpart on the results of the 14th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and expressed his country’s condolences on the recent passing of Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to comprehensive cooperation, as well as their willingness to continue working together in areas of common interest.
