The ninth month of the year concentrates the peak of hurricane activity in the North Atlantic Ocean, the statistical peak of which occurs around the 10th, warned Professor Luis Enrique Ramos Guadalupe, Coordinator of the History Commission of the Cuban Meteorological Society.

Such an increase is related to the number of hurricanes affecting the nation. According to the official chronology of the Institute of Meteorology, 38 in September have impacted the country between 1791 and 2024, equivalent to 31% of the total, the expert added in his commentary for the Cuban News Agency.

They represent, he emphasized, nearly a third of all those that have struck the country in 233 years.  He emphasized that the highest number of tropical cyclone formations in a single month occurred in September 2020, with nine tropical cyclones; that is, one every 72 hours.

Regarding the Cuban archipelago, the trajectories that move longitudinally along the northern and southern axes stand out in the ninth month, which means that Cuba has been affected on several occasions without the center of the system crossing over the national territory.

Between 2003 and 2024, the most notable September hurricanes for Cuba have been Ivan (2004), Ike (2008), Irma (2017), and Ian (2022), all of them of great intensity, so it is essential to be prepared to face their contingencies, Ramos Guadalupe finally recommended.
