Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla has met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, a meeting during which he explained the daily realities faced by the Cuban people due to unilateral US coercive measures.
Bruno Rodríguez denounced to Guterres the consequences of the strangulation policy pursued by the United States government, characterized by a criminal energy blockade, the tightening of the embargo, and the application of secondary sanctions.
The exchange with Guterres took place during the Cuban official’s visit to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly debate entitled “Necessity of ending the trade and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.”
During the debate, the Cuban Foreign Minister reiterated that Cuba does not represent a threat to U.S. national security and reported that the damages caused by the embargo between March 2025 and February 2026 amounted to $8.103 billion, bringing the cumulative cost to $178.7 billion at current prices.
He explained that this policy generates unbearable blackouts that affect access to drinking water, food shortages, and a decline in health that has raised infant mortality to 9.9 per 1,000 live births.
Regarding the survival rate of children with cancer, which has fallen from 85 percent to 65 percent, he said: “The trend coincides with the harshest periods of the US embargo,” adding that “the blockade suffocates and kills.”
The Cuban foreign minister stated at the United Nations that “the United States government is waging a multidimensional war against Cuba that has become more brutal in the last seven months.” “The energy embargo and the naval blockade, which is an act of war, have been added,” he affirmed.
Bruno Rodriguez also denounced the existence of a multidimensional war that includes the harassment of US military tankers near the largest island in the Antilles, as well as threats of military intervention.
The motion to examine the matter in plenary session was overwhelmingly supported by 136 votes in favor, overcoming the objections and procedural maneuvers presented by the US delegation, which, along with other countries, totaled only nine votes against and 30 abstentions.
