International manifesto against military aggression against Cuba presented

by Ed Newman

In the context of Cuba’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly on July 7, the manifesto “No to Military Aggression Against Cuba. International Manifesto Against the Advance of Fascism in Latin America” was presented this Thursday in Mexico City, supported by 8,840 signatures from 58 countries.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, via its WhatsApp channel, the document and call for signatures denounces the warmongering escalation of the United States government, headed by Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and warns that the economic, commercial, financial, and energy embargo imposed on the island constitutes an act of genocide.

According to the text, the fuel shortage has caused prolonged blackouts and disruptions to hospitals, schools, and basic services, increasing the population’s difficulties in accessing food, medicine, and transportation.

The UN General Assembly approved, for the thirty-third consecutive time, a resolution demanding an end to the blockade, with 165 votes in favor, reinforcing the Cuban government’s denunciations of the policy’s impact on human rights.

Among the prominent figures who endorsed the manifesto are musician Silvio Rodríguez, writers Elena Poniatowska and Laura Esquivel, journalist Ignacio Ramonet, political scientist Atilio Borón, and the director of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto.

The text also received support from more than 560 social and academic organizations in Latin America and Europe, who agreed that the blockade constitutes collective punishment against the 10 million Cubans.

The manifesto unfolds against a backdrop of escalating tensions, marked by the intensification of the energy blockade and pressure from sectors of the US administration for direct military action against Cuba.

The call to action is part of the growing wave of anti-fascist mobilizations taking place in Latin America, Europe, and the United States in response to the rise of the far right and imperialist policies.
