Mexican union reaffirms solidarity with Cuba

by Ed Newman

The National Autonomous University of Mexico Workers’ Union (Stunam) expressed solidarity with Cuba during the opening of its 43rd Congress, the Cuban Embassy highlighted in Mexico City.

According to a post on the diplomatic mission’s social media account, thousands of attendees at the meeting, being held in this capital until August 2, chanted “Cuba yes, Yankees no,” in support of the Cuban people.

In a message delivered during the event, the Cuban Ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez, thanked the workers’ organization for its solidarity on behalf of education workers and the Cuban people.

He also denounced the aggressions of the United States and reaffirmed the Cuban people’s determination to fight and resist in defense of their sovereignty.

Since the intensification of the blockade imposed by Washington on the island, the National Union of Cuban Workers (STUNAM) has issued statements and held meetings with its affiliates and international organizations, reaffirming its support for the Caribbean nation’s right to self-determination.

The lack of access to fuel, resulting from the US measures, affects critical areas such as electricity generation, the operation of hospitals, food production and distribution, and water pumping on the island.

Added to this is Washington’s persecution of any source of financing that Cuba might obtain; the use of decrees and secondary sanctions to impose restrictions on key economic entities; and the threat of military action.
