Puerto Rican solidarity committee condemns new sanctions against Cuba

by Ed Newman

The president of the Committee of Solidarity with Cuba (CSC) in Puerto Rico, Milagros Rivera, has condemned the new U.S. sanctions against leaders and institutions of the Caribbean nation.

“In a desperate and fraudulent manner, the U.S. State Department is attempting to criminalize solidarity and is imposing ridiculous sanctions on three leaders of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) in an attempt to intimidate Cuba’s friends who are exercising their solidarity in the face of the genocidal blockade.”

The Puerto Rican leader condemned the blockade, “which has intensified since January 29 with the oil blockade that affects the entire Cuban people at a high cost in human lives.”

“Seven months have passed since that genocidal measure, and Cuba remains strong and alive. The solidarity of peoples and some governments has been essential. The activities commemorating the Centenary of Fidel Castro have just concluded successfully, despite threats of military invasion. More than 1,500 delegates from 63 countries participated in the first Fidel Colloquium: Legacy and Future. Several volunteer work brigades and delegations from all five continents arrived in Cuba.”

Milagros Rivera indicated that Puerto Rico was present, delivering donations to hospitals in Santa Clara, polyclinics in Caimito and Havana, children’s homes in Havana, and the Federation of Cuban Women for various projects with vulnerable families.

She explained that solidarity was also shown by friends from Latin America, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and residents of the United States, which “enrages the criminals who want to suffocate Cuba and impose new sanctions to try to subdue Cuba and defeat solidarity.”

The new sanctions imposed by the Donald Trump administration target Fernando González Llort, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and a Hero of the Republic of Cuba; Noemí Rabaza Fernández, first vice president; and Leima Martínez Freire, director for North America at ICAP.

They also target the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara nickel company; the Metal Import, Export, and Trading Company (MetalCuba); the Geominero Salinero Business Group (Geominsal); and ACINOX Comercial, a state-owned company dedicated to the import and export of metallurgical products and industrial equipment.

The new sanctions also target the Cuban Ministry of Construction; the Agency for Contracting and Commercial Representations (Acorec, S.A.); Coratur, S.A., which focuses on foreign trade operations and partnerships with foreign markets; Transimport, a company that has imported vehicles, automotive parts, and industrial equipment; and Consumimport, which imports and exports various products, including appliances and construction materials.

“In short, the United States government continues its policy of strangulation against Cuba. We, the people, must confront this fascist plan with greater solidarity and global action,” Rivera declared, calling for the defense of Cuba and the sovereignty of nations.

Milagros Rivera insisted that “we will defend life against the criminals who are trying to govern the world.” The president of the CSC stated that “only an army of millions of people in solidarity with the Cuban people and their government can defeat the fascism” promoted by the Trump regime.
