The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cuba (MINED) confirmed that the upcoming 2026–2027 academic year will officially start on September 1, in compliance with the institutional calendar established for the national education system.
Through its official social media channels, the agency ratified the date and emphasized the importance of full, punctual student attendance from day one, a factor considered key to optimal pedagogical development. In its statement, MINED also reiterated that education remains a fundamental right and a shared responsibility among families, schools, and society.
This decision comes as Cuba faces an unprecedented crisis caused by decades of economic blockade, intensified by the extreme hostility of the Trump administration. Amid blackouts and shortages, the priority will always be the uninterrupted development of boys and girls.
Assessment and preparations across the national territory
As part of the organizational schedule leading up to the opening of classrooms, Minister of Education Naima Trujillo Barreto begins a working tour across all provinces on Thursday, August 20.
The main objective of this national tour is to verify on the ground the readiness of educational institutions and confirm the availability of essential logistical, material, and teaching resources needed to welcome students under the required conditions.
