Ernesto Soberón, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, denounced on Thursday the policy of suffocation being applied by the United States government against the Cuban people, with the intensification of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.
On the social network X, the diplomat described the imposition of constant sanctions, which have a direct impact on the daily lives of the Cuban people, as collective punishment.
Cuba’s representative to the UN emphasized that, despite the denial of the existence of the blockade by U.S. diplomats, recent statements by the top official in charge of U.S. foreign policy, Marco Rubio, explicitly acknowledge the policy of strangulation directed against the Cuban people, the existence of the blockade, its constant intensification, and the terrible impact it has on the quality of life of the Cuban people.
Ernesto Soberón indicated that the Secretary of State stated: “What we try to teach them is that there are no escape valves. Every time they create a new mechanism to try to get rid of the noose, we simply close it.”
The UN diplomat recalled that this unprecedented intensification of the blockade, including its extraterritorial nature, flagrantly violates international law, international humanitarian law, the rules of international trade, and the Charter of the United Nations.
The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations also refuted the allegations regarding the supposed withholding of 18 billion dollars by the Cuban government, which, he claims, could be used to improve the quality of life of the people.
“The issue isn’t whether Cuba has a lack of money or a surplus; the problem is that foreign counterparties don’t dare to trade with Cuba for fear of being sanctioned by the U.S. government.”
He also emphasized that, year after year, the vast majority of Member States condemn the existence of the blockade in the UN General Assembly and demand an end to this genocidal policy.
