The Trump team in the White House is now recycling plans, which even include the CIA, to dominate this green crocodile of the Caribbean and subdue the Cubans; but from the North they haven’t been able to break us in almost seven decades, nor will they be able to, no matter how much they try.
No one had any doubt about it, but he made it very clear: “I don’t work for Cuba, I work for the United States.” Closer to the truth, he could say: “I work to be President of the United States,” the objective of that ambitious whisperer in the Trump entourage, who sees, in the siege of Cuba and the catastrophic damage it causes daily to our people, an easy path to the top of the White House.
The siege against this small Caribbean nation is perhaps at its most brutal stage, although Marco Rubio and Donald Trump come up with new measures daily to close off any semblance of relief in an economic war that has lasted more than six decades and has taken on all sorts of forms. Despite its cruelty and duration, they have not managed to win. Cuba exists, survives, and does not surrender, even in such terrible circumstances.
To attempt regime change, the two-person team intensified their efforts, beginning with Executive Order 14404, hoping for the success predicted in “The Decline and Fall of Castro,” the memorandum written by Lester D. Mallory, Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs under President Dwight Eisenhower, in April 1960.
They failed then, as well as with the mercenary invasion at Playa Girón, the threat of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, plagues and epidemics, sabotage, terrorist actions, regional isolation under pressure from the Monroe Doctrine and the discredited OAS, among other operations.
They have done immense damage with the blockade laws and similar measures (the declaration of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, the Torricelli Cuban Democracy Act of 1992, the Helms-Burton Act of 1996, and others), preventing or hindering trade, travel, and financial transactions, even from the extraterritoriality imposed on other countries. But nothing has achieved the desired result.
So now they are tightening the screws to the maximum to “provoke hunger, desperation, and the overthrow of the government,” as that original plan stipulated, a plan expanded in its cruelty with the energy exclusion of zero oil for Cuba, which they maintain in 2026, so that we have not even a glimmer of hope, only the greatest human suffering.
Even the CIA has come into the picture, having admitted at some point during the protracted confrontation that its covert operations and sanctions had failed to achieve any of their objectives. Now, they are recreating a secret task force, given the Executive Order that asserts Cuba “constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security and foreign policy.
In this regard, Marc Polymeropoulos, former deputy chief of operations for Europe and Eurasia at the CIA, told reporters that the US Central Intelligence Agency group is likely “preparing the environment for either military action or covert action, and covert action doesn’t necessarily mean a coup. It could mean influence operations.”
And Trump continues signing and imposing sanctions in the time that has passed in 2026, which, it seems, was intended to be the year to resolve the problem.
Marco Rubio has gloated, to the point of not ruling out the military option; he was enthusiastic about the success achieved in Venezuela on January 3rd, and he continues to issue threats. But the days go by and there are nuances. Now he speaks of a transition, but one that will take time.
“I am confident that Cuba, by the time this administration is ending or even before this administration concludes, will be on an irreversible path toward a very different future,” Rubio said during the podcast of Republican political advisor Katie Miller, who asked him if, After Venezuela and Iran (although success hasn’t been his even in that distant and wealthy country), Cuba would be next.
Thus, Trump’s assertion that “Cuba would soon fall” in a “friendly takeover” remained just that: in February and March. This leads us to speculate on the futility of the exploratory meetings between the CIA Director and officials from Southern Command, in their attempt to turn us back into vassals, as was imposed upon us until December 31, 1958.
So, once again, maximum pressure is being applied along old, well-trodden, and failed paths, such as this one involving the CIA, “a structure designed to concentrate human, technical, and financial resources on the Island, incorporating analysts, intelligence officers, cyber operations specialists, and personnel involved in influence operations,” according to Axios.
