“Thank you, Barcelona!” Silvio Rodríguez posted just a couple of hours ago on his official website, Zurrón del Aprendiz, following the resounding success of his first concert this Wednesday at the Liceu in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. Thousands of people attended, marking his return to those stages after five years.
Despite attempts by some extremists to disrupt the performance of the founder of the Cuban Nueva Trova movement, fans of Silvio Rodríguez’s work flocked to enjoy a concert that began with the classic “Historia de las Sillas” (Story of the Chairs) and continued with well-known songs such as “Alas de Colibrí” (Hummingbird Wings), “Sueño con serpientes” (I Dream of Snakes), “Quién fuera” (If Only), “Escaramujo” (Rosehip), “Pequeña serenata diurna” (Little Daytime Serenade), “Canción de elegido” (Song of the Chosen One), “¿A dónde van?” (Where Are They Going?), and “Ojalá” (Hopefully), among other more recent tracks from his extensive repertoire.
Numerous media outlets in Spain, Europe, and Latin America are reporting today on the start of the singer-songwriter’s tour of the Iberian Peninsula, which will continue until October 4th and will take him to seven other cities in addition to Barcelona, where songs, love, and hope prevailed over the selfishness and fundamentalism of those who hate Cuba.
Last May, on his official website and social media, the singer-songwriter invited Spaniards to join him on his tour, announcing that he would be performing in Zaragoza, Bilbao, Valencia, A Coruña, Seville, and Murcia, concluding in Madrid on October 4th.
Niurka González and Malva Rodríguez, along with the musicians who have regularly accompanied him on his recent shows in Cuba and South America, are joining the singer-songwriter, who will turn 80 this November. For nearly 60 years, he has dedicated his life to championing and promoting singer-songwriter music, particularly within the Nueva Trova movement in Cuba.
