The National Italy-Cuba Friendship Association (ANAIC) has condemned Italy’s abstention at the United Nations General Assembly during the vote on a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. blockade against Cuba.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the organization described the decision by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government as a “disgrace” and questioned Rome’s shift in position, noting that it had traditionally supported the draft resolution presented by Cuba.
The statement, titled “The Silence of the Indecent,” expressed opposition to the Italian stance, characterizing it as a reflection of subordination to Washington.
Furthermore, it denounced the pressure exerted by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump on other nations to influence the outcome of the vote.
The message highlighted, however, the overwhelming support for the Cuban resolution among UN member states, despite U.S. pressure and blackmail aimed at preventing its adoption.
Elsewhere in the post, ANAIC maintained that the result confirms international backing for the demand to end sanctions against the island.
The organization also linked Italy’s position on Cuba to the Meloni government’s political and economic support for the United States and Israel. It criticized what it views as a contradiction between this stance and the Prime Minister’s own statements regarding the difficulties the Italian population faces in accessing essential goods.
The text questioned why the Italian government chose to abstain on a resolution that defends Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination, as well as the right of its people to live free from the consequences of the U.S. economic siege.
It asserted that this decision damages Italy’s international image and reproached the government for failing to maintain the country’s traditional support for the Cuban demand. “We stand, and will always stand, with Cuba, in favor of ending the U.S. blockade—the primary cause of the suffering endured by a dignified and peaceful people,” concluded the statement from the ANAIC.
The General Assembly resolution, titled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” was approved on Wednesday with 130 votes in favor, 17 against and 25 abstentions.
