Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted on Wednesday the overwhelming support received by the island at the United Nations General Assembly, where a resolution calling for an end to the blockade was approved for the 34th time.
In a message posted on the social network X, the president stated that the international community once again spoke out — by an overwhelming majority — against this policy, despite pressures reported by Cuban authorities in the days leading up to the vote.
“This victory for Cuba today at the United Nations General Assembly is a victory for the heroic Cuban people, who do not surrender in the face of economic strangulation, threats, and abuse by the U.S. government,” the head of state declared.
Díaz-Canel noted that the result serves as evidence of international backing for the island’s long-standing demand against a policy that hinders the country’s economic and social development.
Meanwhile, the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power, Esteban Lazo, described the outcome as a victory for the Cuban people, for truth, and for justice within the United Nations.
“The vast majority of the international community demanded an end to the blockade,” the head of the Cuban Parliament stated, commenting on the vote via the digital platform.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero also celebrated the result, highlighting that 130 countries supported the resolution presented by Cuba. “Once again, Cuba emerges victorious at the UN, with 130 countries voting in favor of ending the blockade,” he wrote on X.
The General Assembly approved the resolution with 130 votes in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions, during the final day of the annual debate on the need to end the blockade imposed by Washington against the largest island of the Antilles.
Over the course of two days, representatives from dozens of countries took the floor at the United Nations headquarters to express their positions on a draft resolution that Cuba has presented annually to the organization’s primary deliberative body since 1992.
During the debate, the Cuban delegation maintained that the blockade has intensified to unprecedented levels over the past year, continuing to have a severe impact on essential sectors of the economy and the daily lives of the population.
