The 22nd Congress of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC) began on Friday in Havana, connected via videoconference with all the country’s provinces in sessions marked by the complex context on the island.

Current conditions dictate that the final days of the meeting, on June 26th and 27th, be condensed, austere and rational, reflecting the circumstances and challenges of the moment, but with important decisions for the present and future of the working class of the Caribbean nation.

The event, convened under the slogan “For Cuba, Together We Create,” will address the defense of the homeland, along with proposals to help boost production and Cuban businesses.

At this point, priority will be given to analyzing the government program, especially the economic and social transformations with 176 recently approved measures.

For its implementation, the preparation and participation of workers and their union leadership in administrative decisions will be essential, as will monitoring companies experiencing economic losses.

The workers’ congress in Cuba will consider the concerns of its members regarding wages and the erosion of their purchasing power due to high prices, among other issues.

The leading and proactive role of labor unions in the workplace and their engagement with the community will be another topic of analysis at the Cuban workers’ congress.

These concluding sessions will be characterized by a firm stance in the face of threats of military aggression, the intensification of the blockade with two executive orders, another set of hostile measures, and a severe energy embargo imposed by the U.S. government.

The Congress comes at a time when Cuba is experiencing very difficult, tense and suffocating times, with shortages of all kinds, but lamenting or surrendering has never been part of this people’s history, stated members of the Organizing Committee of the 22nd CTC Congress, chaired by Osnay Colina.

In the lead-up to the congress, during an International Virtual Forum from Havana on Wednesday, June 24, leaders and trade union organizations from around the world expressed their solidarity and reaffirmed that Cuba is not alone.

The final days of the 22nd CTC Congress, on June 26 and 27, were the culmination of a process that began in January 2024 at the grassroots level of the trade union movement, and continued with conferences held by the 15 national unions, as well as the National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers (ANIR).
