Mexican lawyers condemn energy blockade against Cuba

by Ed Newman

The National Association of Democratic Lawyers (ANAD) of Mexico condemned the energy blockade that the United States maintains against Cuba and denounced the “constant, inhumane, and ruthless harassment” of the Caribbean nation.

In a statement, the organization strongly rejected the executive order signed in January by US President Donald Trump, which declares a supposed “national emergency” and tightens the blockade applied against the island nation for more than 60 years.

The lack of access to fuel, resulting from the intensification of aggressive US policy, affects critical areas such as electricity generation, the operation of hospitals, food production and distribution, and water pumping on the island.

“This is an act that constitutes an unfounded, unjust, and criminal attack not only against the Cuban people, but also against all the historical advances humanity has made in legal matters over the past decades,” the organization asserted.

ANAD pointed out that such an action is contrary to all historical, political, moral, and, above all, legal foundations, while also violating international law and the principles of sovereign equality, independence, and non-intervention, among others.

The organization noted that Trump not only lacks the constitutional authority to issue such a decree, as that power rests solely with the US Congress, but also that Washington has no authority or jurisdiction whatsoever to act outside its own territory.

The Association recalled that the United Nations General Assembly has voted on more than 30 occasions to end the blockade against Cuba.   They reiterated their call for solidarity with the Cuban people and their government.
