Cuba welcomes home Guatemalan medical professionals

With honor and their flag held high for a duty fulfilled, 26 Cuban medical professionals who had been serving in Guatemala were welcomed home on Tuesday at Havana’s José Martí International Airport.

Tania Margarita Cruz Hernández, First Deputy Minister of Public Health, highlighted at the welcoming ceremony the tangible impact of Cuban medical cooperation in the Central American country for more than 27 years, which has involved the participation of over 11,327 healthcare professionals and their respective contributions to improving the Guatemalan healthcare system.

Cruz Hernández lamented that the Guatemalan government’s unilateral decision will deprive the most vulnerable of their right to health and life, while reaffirming Cuba’s unwavering commitment to the Guatemalan people, stating that they can always count on Cuba’s firm and selfless support.

The representative conveyed to the healthcare workers the warm embrace and recognition of the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda, the highest levels of government, and the people who welcome them back home.

Dr. Edy Jorge Soria Poll, from Camagüey, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, emphasized that behind every white coat lies an invaluable story of humanism, love, and dedication that transcends borders.

He noted that the fulfillment of their duty marks a new chapter in the collective work of thousands who have championed health in every corner of the country, and that this achievement belongs to all the healthcare workers who accompanied the Guatemalan people.

The welcoming ceremony was attended by Arelis Marrero Guerrero, Deputy Head of the Department of Attention to the Social Sector of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, and José Carlos Rodríguez Ruiz, Deputy Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other authorities of Public Health and medical collaboration.
