Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, thanked the Mexican people for their expressions of support for the island during the march held this Sunday in Mexico City to commemorate National Rebellion Day.
The president acknowledged on social media the mobilization that took place on July 26th along Paseo de la Reforma, commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, an event that marked the beginning of the process that culminated in the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959.
“Thank you, Mexico. Once again at the forefront of the dignity of Our America. To all those who marched for Cuba this July 26th, the grateful embrace of a people who have always found solidarity in the noble and generous land of Mexico.”
Eugenio Martínez Enríquez, Cuba’s ambassador to Mexico, reported on his official Facebook page that pressure from the United States government on his country led Mexican organizations to commemorate the date in a unified manner, unlike in previous years.
Thousands of people marched from the Hemiciclo a Juárez monument to the former site of the U.S. embassy, where they demanded the lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington against Cuba.
The groups carried flags and banners with messages of support for the sovereignty of the Caribbean nation and rejected the coercive measures that hinder its development.
At the end of the march, the organizers announced that these protests will be held more frequently in Mexico City as an expression of ongoing solidarity with Cuba.
