The Workers’ Party (PT) officially announced on Sunday the candidacy of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for re-election in the general elections next October.
With this step, as reported by news outlets such as the G1 portal, the ruling coalition’s candidacy for the upcoming elections is consolidated.
This decision was adopted during the PT’s National Convention, held at the Expo Center Norte in the city of Sao Paulo, where the candidacy of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), to once again be part of the presidential ticket was also ratified.
The official announcement was made by the PT, the main force in the Brazil of Hope party federation, which also includes the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and the Green Party (PV).
This candidacy also has the backing of the other political organizations that make up the governing coalition, which must formally confirm their support within their respective party bodies.
Thousands of activists, leaders, members of parliament, governors, ministers, and representatives of social movements participated in the event, which marked the formal start of the president’s campaign.
In his address to those present, Lula defended the continuity of the political project promoted by his administration and maintained that the main priority will be preserving democracy, strengthening national sovereignty, and maintaining economic growth with social inclusion.
He also championed the policies to combat hunger, expand employment, increase the minimum wage, and protect the social programs implemented during his administration.
He emphasized that the electoral campaign will focus on defending national interests, economic development, the ecological transition, and reducing inequalities, along with protecting democratic institutions against hate speech and threats to the constitutional order.
News reports indicated that the official campaign launch is scheduled for the coming days at the historic Primero de Mayo stadium in São Bernardo do Campo, the birthplace of Lula’s union leadership.
Brazilian electoral law stipulates that party conventions must conclude before August 5, while the final registration of candidacies with the Superior Electoral Court must be completed by August 15.
With Sunday’s decision, the Workers’ Party (PT) completes the internal process to officially present Lula as its presidential candidate, while allied parties move forward with formalizing the unified candidacy of the ruling coalition.
