Angolan Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Esmeralda Mendonça received Cuban Ambassador to Angola, Oscar León, on Monday to discuss the state of bilateral relations.
Both sides addressed issues of common interest and reaffirmed their shared commitment to continue strengthening the historic bonds of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation that characterize relations between the two peoples and governments, the Caribbean nation’s diplomatic mission stated on its Facebook page.
According to the source, Secretary of State Esmeralda Mendonça reaffirmed the importance Angola places on its relations with Cuba and emphasized the commitment to continue promoting mechanisms for political dialogue and bilateral cooperation.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the current international context and the need to continue promoting multilateralism, respect for international law, and the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for its part, reported that the two diplomats discussed key areas of cooperation of mutual interest, as well as ways to strengthen the historic alliance between the two nations, marked by decades of close political and diplomatic relations.
It noted that both countries maintain active collaboration in the areas of health, education, higher education, agriculture, tourism, culture, sports, public works, transportation, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, technical and vocational training, and academic exchange.
Furthermore, in recent decades, thousands of Angolan students have completed their studies at Cuban institutions, while Cuban specialists continue to participate in various strategic sectors in Angola.
The ambassador of the Caribbean nation recently made a working visit to the provinces of Bié and Huambo, focused on strengthening cooperation.
During his stay in these territories, he spoke with local authorities, Cuban residents, collaborators from the island, and Angolan alumni known as Caimaneros, among others.
