Argentine lawmakers condemn U.S. economic war against Cuba

National deputies Hilda Aguirre, Gabriela Pedrali, and Sergio Casas, representing the Argentinian province of La Rioja, condemned the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for more than six decades.

In a statement obtained by Prensa Latina, the legislators from La Rioja also deemed it unacceptable that in the 21st century, “an attempt is being made to discipline a people through hunger, isolation, or the threat of war.”

They asserted that Cuba has demonstrated throughout its history a profound commitment to peace, solidarity, and cooperation among nations, even under extremely adverse conditions.

Furthermore, they denounced that such economic hostility subjects “the brotherly people of Cuba to conditions of extreme suffocation, violating basic human rights and hindering their sovereign development.”

“This blockade, maintained by the United States, constitutes a systematic policy of harassment that has been repeatedly condemned by the international community,” Aguirre, Pedrali and Casas emphasize.

In this context, they warn, the recent statements by Donald Trump are particularly serious, as they not only reinforce the logic of the blockade but also advance the threat of possible military action against the island.

“These statements are part of a strategy of pressure and destabilization that jeopardizes regional peace and violates fundamental principles of international law.”

“As representatives of the Argentinian people, we reaffirm our commitment to the defense of sovereignty, the self-determination of peoples, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. The history of our region teaches us that intervention, interference and violence have never been the way.”

And they emphasize: “Cuba is not alone. Latin America is a region of peace and will not tolerate setbacks in terms of the sovereignty and dignity of its peoples.”
