Havana, May 30 (RHC) – At least 34 people were injured and 130 were arrested today, after the center of this capital was paralyzed, where 40,000 people enjoyed and celebrated, many with violence, the victory of PSG in the Champions League.
The fervor following the Parisian club’s 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in Budapest overwhelmed the police deployment implemented by the Interior Ministry throughout the country, particularly in Paris.
Fireworks, stampedes by fans, burning bicycles and motorcycles, six damaged vehicles, and at least two completely destroyed businesses are the official police tally, although all indications suggest the week-long celebration will continue for several more hours.
PSG retained the title, but the celebration has exceeded all expectations, with a near-total traffic standstill in central Paris, where a large crowd, mostly teenagers, is expressing its joy in ways that are not always conventional.
The mobilization of 8,000 officers, primarily riot police, appeared insufficient in Paris. While such situations are common for football-related celebrations, they always pose a challenge for French authorities.
This abrupt breakdown of order is an issue that threatens to become one of the points that French politicians could initially use as they officially began their election campaign for the 2027 presidential elections.
