Brazilian Senator Humberto Costa, Secretary of International Relations for the Workers’ Party (PT) of Brazil, highlighted the approval of a motion of solidarity with Cuba during the 8th National Congress of that political organization.

Speaking to Prensa Latina during the event, which concludes this Sunday after three days of debate, the leader emphasized the importance of the gathering not only for the party, but also in a regional and international context marked by significant political processes.

“The Congress has been very important, not only for the PT, because this year we have elections that are very significant, not only for Brazil, but for all of Latin America, for the whole world,” he stated.

Costa emphasized that one of the topics addressed at the meeting was international solidarity, particularly with Cuba and Palestine, which resulted in the adoption of concrete initiatives.

“One thing that was strongly emphasized here was solidarity with other countries, especially Cuba and Palestine,” he noted.

The senator highlighted that Congress approved a motion requesting the Brazilian government to maintain and expand its solidarity efforts with the Caribbean nation, both in the humanitarian and political spheres.

“We approved a motion here specifically in defense of Cuba, a friendly country, a very important country for its struggle on behalf of the world,” stated the PT’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Costa declared that the Caribbean nation desperately needs political support to overcome the blockade and once again become a country with a strong future.

The motion he referred to, approved this Saturday in Congress, condemns the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than six decades, and characterizes it as a criminal, inhumane measure incompatible with international law.

Furthermore, the document formalizes the PT’s support for the “Solar Panels for Cuba” campaign, an initiative organized by solidarity groups, social movements, unions, and members of parliament to raise funds for the installation of photovoltaic systems in intensive care units of Cuban hospitals.

To that end, the document calls on party members, their leadership, members of parliament, and popular movements to join the “5 reais for Cuba” campaign, through which each member is required to donate at least that amount of money toward the purchase of the solar panels.

In addition, on Friday, the opening day of the event, an international solidarity event was held with a special focus on Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine, in which diplomatic representatives and members of parliament from those countries participated.
