Chaos in New York after Knicks’ NBA Victory

by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, June 14 (RHC) – The celebrations in New York City for the Knicks’ victory in the NBA Finals and their championship win ended with the arrest of 63 people.

Several school buses were set on fire in Times Square, police vehicles were damaged on Sixth Avenue, and a 17-year-old was shot in the foot near the center of the celebrations, local media reported Sunday.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that arrests made overnight included charges of assaulting a police officer, illegal possession of a firearm, property damage, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstructing public administration.

According to the NYPD, 10 officers were injured, including one who was punched in the face and another who was hit with a glass bottle. Four knife attacks were also reported.

Although the game was played the previous evening in San Antonio, Texas, against the Spurs, fans gathered in Times Square and various locations throughout the city to watch the game and see the New York team rally in the fourth quarter to win the title, their first in more than 50 years.

President Donald Trump attended Game 3 at Madison Square Garden last week, where he was booed by the crowd during the national anthem before the start of the series between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.

New York hosted the 2026 NBA Finals on Monday for the first time in more than two decades, but fans were left without the usual public event outside the arena after it was canceled due to Trump’s presence.

The 2026 NBA Finals pitted the two teams against each other in a best-of-seven series that began on June 3 and would have extended to June 19 had it gone to a seventh game. The Knicks clinched the series by winning Game 4.
