Claver-Carone: The lobbyist who became a public official to continue profiting from hatred

In the turbulent waters of U.S. politics, few figures represent the rottenness of the anti-Cuban lobby as faithfully as Mauricio Claver-Carone.   He is not a diplomat, not an ideologue, not a defender of freedoms.   He is a political mercenary, a man who has made hostility toward Cuba his only negotiable asset.

The Business of Hate

Before becoming a public official, Claver-Carone was a lobbyist. And not just any lobbyist: he worked for years for the US-Cuba Democracy PAC, the financial machine that fuels the campaigns of Miami’s most extremist politicians. In other words, he made a fortune promoting the blockade, sanctions, and economic warfare against his own country of origin, long before any official position legitimized him.

What kind of person turns the suffering of their own people into a profitable business?  That’s the question any ordinary Cuban should ask themselves when they hear his name. Claver-Carone doesn’t defend Cuba; he exploits it.  He doesn’t seek liberation; he seeks profit.

The Unresolved Case

Then came the rise. Trump placed him at the head of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and Claver-Carone did what he does best: abuse his power.  He was dismissed for having a romantic relationship with a subordinate whom he financially benefited, increasing her salary by more than $133,000 in less than a year.  The IDB Board of Governors voted almost unanimously for his removal. Expelled in shame from a multilateral organization, this is the “architect” who today designs the policy of suffocation against Cuba.

The Cuban government has rightly labeled him a “filibuster” and an “enemy of America.”  And with good reason: his more than 200 coercive measures sought to provoke the collapse of the island between 2018 and 2021.  They did not succeed, but they did cause enormous gratuitous and undeserved suffering that still persists, in addition to the largest migratory flow in our history.

The Hypocrisy of the Migrant Who Forgot

Claver-Carone is the son of a Cuban mother and a Spanish father.  He grew up between Madrid and Miami, experiencing displacement and exile.  However, instead of building bridges so that Cubans today do not have to go through what his family went through, he has dedicated his life to digging trenches.

It’s the classic case of the migrant who, once safe, decides to kick down the ladder so no one else can climb. He’s the one who, having known the pain of carrying a suitcase, becomes the executioner who squeezes the throats of those who stayed behind. Did his family migrate so that he could become the main architect of the suffocation that today forces thousands of Cubans to do the same?

Ordinary Cuban, don’t be fooled

This man is not your savior. He’s the same kind of corrupt individual who criticizes Latin American governments while he was stealing from the Inter-American Development Bank. He’s the lobbyist who turned hatred into a business. He’s the son of migrants who forgot his origins to embrace the empire.

History — that teacher who doesn’t fail — reveals an uncomfortable truth: there is no symmetrical hatred when one side carries the weight of centuries of reason and the other the master’s slogan. Claver-Carone embodies that slogan. Cuba resists despite him, not because of him.
