Colombian President Gustavo Petro will visit Cuba in the coming hours in what will be his last trip abroad as head of state, according to an announcement he made on his social media account.
The president previously stated that he declined a meeting in the United States and instead chose to travel to the island.
“I replaced it with a place I consider vital for national sovereignty and the struggle for life in the Caribbean: Cuba, under attack,” he stated in his message.
The Colombian president also spoke highly of the Caribbean nation in the same statement. “What can be said about Cuba, which gives us its sublime music, full of artistry, and was able to provide us with the vaccines to save the lives of tens of thousands of elderly people who died from COVID-19, and whom, out of political hatred for Cuba, were left to die?” he stated.
Despite the announcement of the visit from the largest island of the Antilles, the details of Petro’s trip have not yet been officially released.
Gustavo Petro also alluded to how he believes his country’s foreign policy will be from now on, following the incoming government’s statements of strengthening ties with Israel.
“Since the Colombian diplomatic agenda will now be reduced to the dictates of Tel Aviv, which determine with whom we have diplomatic relations according to the conveniences of the genocidal regime, then Colombia will be isolated within the small circle of friends of genocide, because humanity is against the human holocaust in Gaza,” he declared.
The comment comes amid announcements by President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella that he will sever diplomatic ties with Havana once he takes office on August 7th.
This stance was rejected by the Cuban Foreign Ministry, which described the statements as “an act of subservience to the United States’ policy of aggression.”
Cuba says that the measure “has no justification whatsoever and does not serve Colombian national interests.”
