Cuba continues to count on international support

by Ed Newman

In the face of the imperialist blockade imposed on Cuba, solidarity actions in support of the Caribbean nation have intensified in recent days in different regions of the world.

International support for the cause of the largest island of the Antilles against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government was amplified this weekend, when media outlets from more than a dozen countries joined together to broadcast a “Cadenazo por Cuba” (a coordinated media event for Cuba).

At 8:00 p.m. Cuban time, an action was launched that consisted of replicating content on different platforms to highlight the heroic resistance of the Cuban people who are facing the consequences of the hostile policies implemented by the U.S. government.

During that same day, more than 200 Puerto Rican artists, intellectuals, activists, and politicians joined together in a declaration condemning the White House’s constant threats against the island and rejecting the energy blockade, economic persecution, and the imposition of sanctions.

Last Wednesday, it was announced that a European convoy of solidarity with Cuba, originating in Italy, began its journey from Brussels, Belgium. With slogans such as “Let Cuba Breathe” and “Europe Wakes Up,” the convoy will travel across the continent to demonstrate that the Caribbean nation is not alone in its struggle against imperialism.

Earlier, the State Duma of the Russian Federal Assembly issued a statement from Moscow addressed to the United Nations, in which they described Washington’s pressure to destabilize the archipelago as a violation of international law.

They also considered the measures adopted by the United States to constitute interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation. Among other actions, Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, recently spoke in Switzerland about the need to lift US sanctions against Cuba.

Türk maintained that their expansion has humanitarian consequences, hindering the Cuban people’s access to goods and services essential for survival.

In response to the energy blockade against Cuba, the National Confederation of Education Workers of Brazil (CNTE) sent funds to finance solar panels to contribute to national energy generation, according to the television network Telesur.

In response to the US administration’s stance, the CNTE reaffirmed its position based on the Brazilian constitutional principles of autonomy and independence of peoples.

During the week, representatives of the French Parliament, the Greek Committee of International Democratic Solidarity, activists and friends from Mongolia, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, the Dominican Republic, among others, raised their voices to once again denounce the imperialist escalation led by the United States and reaffirm the value of a small land that persists in defending its independence against imposed deprivations.
