Havana, August 9 (RHC) – The Cuban men’s team will make its debut today against the Dominican Republic, in the first day of Group B of the XIX Pan American Volleyball Cup, which runs until the 16th at the Poliforum 2 of the Autonomous University of the Mexican state of Morelos.
According to the website of the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean (NORCECA), www.norceca.net, the Cuban team will open its campaign this Sunday against the Dominican Republic, followed by matches against Curaçao on Monday, Guatemala on Wednesday, and Mexico on Thursday, concluding the preliminary round. They will have a rest day on Tuesday.
Under the competition format, the winners of each group, with a total of 10 teams participating, will advance directly to the semifinals. The second and third-place teams will advance to the quarterfinals, and the remaining teams will play matches to determine their final standings.
The Cuban national team consists of setters Lyvan Taboada (27 years old, 199 cm tall) and Ronaldo Flaquet (19 years old, 193 cm tall), opposites José Carlos Romero (27 years old, 202 cm tall) and Daniel MartÃnez (20 years old, 220 cm tall), and outside hitters VÃctor Andreu (24 years old, 200 cm tall), Bryan Camino (23 years old, 188 cm tall), Yusniel Martà (22 years old, 198 cm tall), and Carlos Larrea (20 years old, 193 cm tall).
The team is completed by middle blockers Jakdiel Contreras (22 years old, 203 cm tall), Endriel Pedroso (24 years old, 212 cm tall), and José A. Morejón (20 years old, 203 cm tall), and libero Dayron Tissaut (21 years old, 180 cm tall), under the direction of Darién Ferrer.
Venezuela is the defending champion, having defeated Mexico in the 2025 final. Canada completed the podium, winning the bronze medal against Chile.
Group A includes Canada, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States.
Sunday’s schedule is completed with the matches Canada vs. Trinidad and Tobago, United States vs. Costa Rica, and Mexico vs. Curaçao.
The United States leads the all-time medal count with five gold, three silver, and nine bronze medals, followed by Cuba (4-0-3).
