Cuba denounces in Madrid that it is the target of a multidimensional war

by Ed Newman

Cuba denounced on Friday that it is the target of a multidimensional war, highlighting the policy of strangulation applied by the United States government against the island.

In various interventions during the 12th Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum held in the Spanish capital, the Cuban delegation from the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) emphasized Washington’s collective punishment of the Cuban people.

Cuba’s delegation at the event is led by Ana María Mari Machado, Vice President of the ANPP, and includes deputies Alberto Núñez Betancourt, President of the International Relations Commission, and Elba Martínez Amador, Acting Head of the Cuban Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Commission.

Mari Machado spoke at a working session focused on gender equality and closing the gender gap, where she highlighted the achievements made by the Cuban Revolution.

Gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the eradication of all forms of violence and discrimination against women are causes that Cuba fully champions, the ANPP Vice President affirmed.

At the same time, she underscored that combating all forms of discrimination against women, across all spheres of society, is a constant priority for the Cuban State and Government. “The Constitution of the Republic, approved in a popular referendum in 2019, recognizes the right to equality and prohibits discrimination against women in any sphere or form. In 2022, the Families Code was adopted—one of the most significant pieces of legislation in the country’s social and legal history,” noted Mari Machado.

Legislators from Cuba also called for peace to prevail worldwide, referencing the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace in this context.

Furthermore, at the Ibero-American gathering in Madrid, Cuba outlined its inclusive and participatory model of democracy. Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, the country emphasized its growing global importance and advocated for effective legislative coordination and inter-parliamentary cooperation.

The Cuban delegation also took the opportunity to explain how, despite various constraints, the country is making progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The delegation attending the 12th Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum—which also included Cuba’s ambassador to Spain, Marcelino Medina—

held discussions with Deputy Enrique Santiago, deputy spokesperson for the Sumar Parliamentary Group in the Spanish Lower House.

In addition, the delegation met with legislators from various parliamentary groups in the Congress of Deputies, as well as with Concepción Andreu Rodríguez, Second Vice President of the Spanish Senate.

In these meetings, Mari Machado once again highlighted the current situation in Cuba, specifically the extreme intensification of the blockade, the energy embargo, and the secondary sanctions imposed on the Caribbean nation by the Donald Trump administration.

Finally, the Vice President of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) held talks with Ibero-American Secretary General Andrés Allamand; and with Carles Ensenyat Reig, General Syndic of Andorra, who expressed special gratitude for the collaboration offered during the most difficult moments of the COVID-19 pandemic through the presence of a Cuban medical brigade.
