A Cuban delegation headed by First Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Peñalver Portal participated on Monday in the High-Level Commemorative Meeting for the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Peñalver, who is attending as Special Envoy of the Cuban president, held a meeting on the first day with the Secretary General of the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dušan Kozarev, with whom he reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to deepen ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, the Cuban diplomat outlined the situation facing the island as a result of the tightening of the US blockade, reinforced by an energy embargo, new unilateral sanctions, and the constant threat of military aggression.
According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Peñalver also met at the Cuban diplomatic mission with Serbian parliamentarians and business leaders, representatives of the solidarity movement with Cuba, and Cuban citizens residing in the Balkan country. He shared details with them about the impact of Washington’s measures on the daily lives of Cubans.
The First Deputy Foreign Minister is scheduled to address the plenary session of the meeting on Tuesday, in addition to holding other bilateral meetings with attending delegations.
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was created in Belgrade in 1961 as a forum for political dialogue among countries that chose not to align themselves with either of the Cold War blocs.
Cuba has been an active member since its inception and maintains a prominent presence in the Movement, which comprises more than 120 states.
