Cuba has expressed thanks to UNESCO for its crucial support in the fight against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on the island for over six decades—a blockade that has been intensified by an energy embargo.
“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge UNESCO’s support for Cuba,” stated Ambassador María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, her country’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, during a session of the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations of that international body, headquartered in the French capital.
This backing has not been limited to times of natural disaster; UNESCO’s support for Cuba has also been evident — particularly in the sphere of education — amid current circumstances, the Caribbean diplomat emphasized.
As everyone knows, Herrera Caseiro noted, after more than six decades, Cuba remains the victim of a rigid economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government.
This year in particular, the blockade was intensified to unprecedented levels with the imposition of a total energy embargo against the country, resulting in grave humanitarian consequences and affecting every sector of national life — especially sensitive areas such as education, she pointed out.
UNESCO itself — through the director of its regional office — acknowledged the blockade’s impact on the education sector, noting that it “endangers the future of an entire generation, with long-term consequences,” the ambassador highlighted.
UNESCO also stepped in to provide support in the field of education this past February, in response to the severe impact of this policy of multidimensional aggression against Cuba, she added. Furthermore, he recalled that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) called for the mobilization of funds to support the education system in the Caribbean nation.
