Cuban foreign minister denounces Marco Rubio’s cynicism

by Ed Newman

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has denounced as a fabrication the alleged offer of $100 million in humanitarian aid from the United States government to the Cuban people, and accused Secretary of State Marco Rubio of resorting to lies to justify the criminal attack against his country.

Through his official account on the social media platform X, the Cuban foreign minister stated: “Aware that he needs lies to justify his criminal abuses against the Cuban people, the US Secretary of State fabricates the story of an alleged offer of aid valued at 100 million dollars or more, attempting to deceive the people of Cuba and Americans themselves. Where is this money? What would it be used for?”

Bruno Rodríguez reminded everyone that the millions of dollars in damage caused by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the US government on Cuba are public knowledge; he is also aware of the ruthless human toll of this war, the limitations on income, technology, food, fuel, and medicine it causes, he added.

It takes great cynicism to shamelessly make such a mendacious declaration of supposed aid.  Was he sincere at the Holy See? the Cuban foreign minister questioned, alluding to Rubio’s recent meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.

The Cuban foreign minister’s statements are a response to remarks made by Marco Rubio this Thursday at a press conference in Italy, following his meeting with the Pope, where the US Secretary of State asserted that Washington has offered the Cuban government $100 million in humanitarian aid, but that Havana has refused to accept it.

While Rubio speaks of humanitarian aid, the Donald Trump administration has intensified sanctions against Cuba. On May 1, the US president signed an executive order that tightens the blockade to extreme levels, and on May 7, the Treasury Department added the Cuban entities Gaesa and MoaNickel S.A. to the Specially Designated Nationals List.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry rejected this escalation in a statement, warning that it constitutes an act of ruthless economic aggression that amplifies the extraterritorial effects of the blockade, and cautioned that Washington is attempting to create a humanitarian crisis to justify more dangerous actions, including military aggression.
