The José Martí Association of Cubans Residing in Mexico expressed its rejection in Mexico City of a meeting convened by sectors of the Latin American right wing, scheduled for Wednesday, the 30th, in the Mexican capital.
In a statement– as reported by the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina — the organization noted that some Cubans had confirmed their attendance at the event, an attitude it described as a lack of commitment to their homeland and to the legacy of National Hero José Martí.
It deemed it outrageous that those who support the state maintaining an economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba seek to present themselves as bearers of solutions for the region.
The Association recalled that this blockade has attempted to bring the Cuban people to their knees through hunger and hardship, violating human rights and norms of international law.
It stated that the gathering, promoted by the Free America Forum (*Foro América Libre*), does not represent the interests of Latin American peoples, but rather those of elites seeking to perpetuate dependency and submission to imperialism.
In light of this scenario, it reaffirmed that Cuba relies on international solidarity and the resistance of its people as bastions of dignity.
For more than six decades, the United States has imposed an economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island—a measure tightened last January via an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.
The lack of access to fuel resulting from this intensification affects electricity generation, hospital operations, food production and distribution, and water pumping.
Meanwhile, Cuba’s ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez, expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by political activist Bertha Luján, who highlighted the importance of strengthening historical ties between the two peoples. Martínez — as noted by the Cuban Embassy in Mexico via its Facebook page — emphasized that Mexico has been one of the countries providing the most assistance to Cuba amidst the escalation of aggression by the United States, and highlighted the support of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and current President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Luján described the blockade imposed by Washington as a crime against humanity and praised the work of the Cuban medical brigade in remote areas of Mexico.
