Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated Ariadna Montiel as the new president of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party in Mexico.

In a message posted on social media, the Cuban president stated: “My sincere congratulations to Comrade Ariadna Montiel Reyes, elected as the new president of @PartidoMorenaMx at the VIII Extraordinary National Congress.”

In the same post, the Cuban head of state thanked the leader of the ruling Mexican political party for “the expressions of solidarity and support” for Cuba, which he described as “a symbol of the shared history that unites us.”

Likewise, Díaz-Canel, also First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), reaffirmed the will and readiness to “continue strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between our parties for the benefit of both peoples.”

Ariadna Montiel, former Secretary of Welfare under Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, had resigned to run for the presidency of Morena, a position to which she was unanimously elected this Sunday.

In her inaugural address, Montiel stated that Mexico is a beacon in the world because “we defend national sovereignty and the self-determination of peoples, and from here we also say very clearly: we support the call made by our president (Claudia Sheinbaum) in Barcelona to end the economic blockade against our sister nation of Cuba,” she declared.

At the same time, she maintained that the embargo imposed by Washington “is leading to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.”

“We clearly reiterate: our solidarity will always be with the people of Cuba.” “We are guided by the Juarez principle: ‘Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace’,” he asserted.
