The Committee of Solidarity in Defense of the Sovereignty of Peoples in Struggle of the Dominican Republic today demanded the release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Congresswoman Cilia Flores from the United States government.

“Freedom for Maduro, freedom for Cilia” and “Yankees out of the Caribbean” were some of the slogans chanted by dozens of participants in the Solidarity Parade, which took place in Simón Bolívar Square in this capital city.

As on previous occasions, the demonstrators denounced that Maduro and his wife were kidnapped during the military aggression against that country earlier this year, an action that left more than 100 dead, including 32 Cuban combatants.

The Committee stated that, in accordance with the Vienna Convention, the Charter of the United Nations, and the principles of international law, the courts of a state lack jurisdiction to try a foreign head of state, by virtue of the principle of sovereign immunity and the legal equality of nations.

In this regard, it demanded unrestricted respect for the self-determination of peoples and the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which it defined as an independent state.

The protesters also denounced the intensification of disinformation campaigns against the Venezuelan president in recent months.

“Aggressions against the region continue to escalate, violating the principle of the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. Our waters remain occupied by military vessels and weapons of high destructive power. Cuba and Venezuela are subject to blockade, threats, and constant harassment,” they stated.

They also warned of threats of military aggression against Cuba, directed at its territory, its political leadership, and historical figures, including Raúl Castro.

Given this situation, the participants called on the Dominican people to remain vigilant and raise their voices against US policies in the region.

They also demanded that the Dominican State fully respect the Constitution and International Law, and that it immediately withdraw US military forces and its weapons from the country.
