The European Parliament in Brussels served as the venue this Wednesday for denunciations against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, during a debate that featured remarks by Dr. Aleida Guevara March.
During the opening session, Guevara March outlined the deteriorating situation on the island resulting from the U.S. blockade and the lack of concrete action by Europe against these measures, according to the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina.
Attendees heard experts point out that the blockade also affects European institutions, which have faced sanctions and fines for maintaining commercial ties with Cuban entities.
Belgian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Marc Botenga stated that Washington aims to bring down Cuba because of the example it sets, and he called for international solidarity with the Cuban people.
Cypriot MEP Giorgos Georgiou noted that the U.S. blockade has been in place for sixty-five years, despite multiple UN resolutions backed by the majority of countries.
Italian MEP Ilaria Salis emphasized that, although the European Union has officially opposed extraterritorial sanctions, this stance has not translated into concrete action against the blockade.
At the close of the session, Aleida Guevara — daughter of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara — recited the poem “La rosa blanca” (The White Rose) by José Martí and declared: “No one has the right to tell the Cuban people how to live.”
