The National Meeting of Cubans Residing in the United States took place over the weekend weekend at the headquarters of Cuba’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. It served as a forum for dialogue with the Cuban delegation attending the High-Level Segment of the General Debate.
According to Cubaminrex, the Foreign Ministry’s website, the meeting was presided over by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, accompanied by Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío and Ana Teresita González Fraga, Director General of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad.
Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío updated participants on the country’s situation and bilateral relations with the United States, while explaining the impact of the policy of economic strangulation on the lives of Cuban families.
The diplomat illustrated — with specific examples — the effects of the energy blockade and secondary measures on essential sectors, particularly healthcare, and highlighted the transformations being undertaken to address the current situation.
Ana Teresita González Fraga, Director General of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad, presented opportunities for expatriates to participate in Cuba’s economic and social development, based on newly approved transformations.
The official announced the upcoming entry into force — in November — of the laws regarding Migration, Citizenship, and Foreigners, along with their respective regulations; these measures consolidate progress in relations with Cuban nationals living abroad.
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez closed the meeting, emphasizing the importance of integrating Cubans residing abroad and their descendants into national life. Foreign Minister Rodríguez acknowledged the efforts of expatriates regarding solidarity projects, the sending of donations, and mobilization against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade — actions that demonstrate their close ties to Cuba.
The event in New York City over the weekend, marked by a broad and constructive exchange, reflected the participants’ commitment to continuing their support for the homeland amidst the current complex situation.
